Wellness is defined as: the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal (Dictionary.com). So, what is the “ness” in “wellness”? I’m glad you asked! Well, I’m going to take this opportunity to assert that “the ness” in “wellness” is being “well” in every aspect of life. Those aspects which come to mind immediately are mental, physical and spiritual health. In addition, finances, relationships and careers are extremely important. As you may know, they are all, in one way or another, intertwined.
Experts will tell you that you cannot be totally well if you are struggling in any of the above mentioned aspects of life. For instance, I know a woman who is suffering with a terminal physical illness. She is usually in extreme pain and was not able to perform optimally on a daily basis at work. She was losing focus because her diagnosis and prognosis were at the forefront of her mind day in and day out. Still, she never sought out a mental health specialist for treatment. As a result, depression eventually consumed her and she lost her job due to poor attendance.
Although it sounds like an impossible task, we all can find balance and wellness. It takes a villiage, however. So first and foremost, you must find your “people”. By that, I mean find those who are there for you no matter what and allow you to be vulnerable without judgement. You will be reminded that life is more manageable when you have someone to live it with. Second, know your limits. Never over-schedule and never have your hands in too many pots. Third, know when to say “yes“ and when to decline. “No”, after all, is a complete sentence.
